Mediahuis is looking for an experienced Freelance GitLab Platform Engineer based in Belgium to strengthen, secure and further professionalise our critical GitLab platform.

GitLab is a critical platform for our development and infrastructure teams. You will help us make the platform more secure, stable and maintainable, while improving automation and sharing your expertise with our internal engineers.

Your role includes.
Further strengthening and hardening our GitLab platform, with particular attention to accounts, tokens, credentials, variables and access management.
Improving monitoring, logging and alerting to ensure a stable and reliable platform.
Reviewing and improving GitLab CI/CD, runners and the container registry.
Supporting GitLab upgrades, lifecycle management and patching.
Automating and documenting platform management and configuration.
Working closely with our Cloud, Infrastructure, Security, Architecture and Development teams.
Sharing your expertise with internal engineers, reducing key-person dependency and contributing to the future evolution of the platform, including a potential SaaS or managed GitLab solution.
For this freelance assignment, you are based in Belgium and able to work from our Antwerp office two days per week. The assignment starts as soon as possible in Q4 2026 and runs at least until the end of 2026, with a possible extension into the first half of 2027.
What makes you a great fit?
What’s on your CV, is important but is by no means the only thing we attach importance to. You have strong hands-on experience with GitLab Self-Managed, GitLab Premium and GitLab CI/CD, combined with solid knowledge of GitLab security and platform hardening. You are comfortable working with Linux, Kubernetes, monitoring and logging, and know how to troubleshoot business-critical platforms. You have experience with automation and Infrastructure as Code, using technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, Bash or Python. Experience with AWS and GitLab SaaS migrations is a plus. You are hands-on, pragmatic and able to work independently, while actively sharing your knowledge with the team. You communicate fluently in Dutch and English.
